The Brave Art of Showing Up: The Mike Hanselman Story

This is part of Poor Man’s Community Spotlight — a series where we sit down with the people who make the Treasure Valley what it is. Not polished bios. Not press releases. Just real people telling real stories, their way. If you’d like to be featured, fill out our storyteller’s questionnaire — it takes as long as you want it to, and nothing gets published without your say-so.

The Myth of the “Nice Guy”

For a long time, Mike Hanselman let people mistake his kindness for weakness. He spent years as the guy who didn’t want to rock the boat — the guy who said “yes” to everyone else while staying silent about his own needs. It led to a life that was, simply put, unfulfilled.

But while Mike was playing it safe in his day job, he was living a second life. Since 2003, he’s been a professional improviser, stepping onto stages across the country with nothing but a suggestion and a prayer. On stage, he was bold; in life, he was hesitant. It took years for him to realize that the rules of the stage were actually the rules for a better life.

The “Chronically Unemployable” Compass

The turning point came with a gut punch. While working for a marketing firm, Mike was called into the CEO’s office and told: “Mike, you’re chronically unemployable.”

To a “nice guy,” that’s an insult. To an improviser, that’s an “offer.” In improv, the golden rule is “Yes, and…” — you accept the reality you’re given and build on it. Mike accepted the reality that he wasn’t built for a cubicle. He was built for the uncertainty of the stage and the autonomy of business. He’s been an owner ever since.

The BRAVE Company: Your Life, Unscripted

Mike founded The BRAVE Company in Boise not just as a marketing firm, but as a conviction. He saw small business owners — the people who make up 99% of our economy — struggling with the same analysis paralysis and imposter syndrome he once faced.

To help them, he brought his two worlds together. Mike doesn’t just build brands; he teaches people how to perform in their own lives.

“Improv isn’t about being funny; it’s about being present.”

He has taken his workshops to every corner of the community:

For Young Students: He teaches them how to keep their spark and find confidence before the world tells them to be quiet.

For Professionals: He shows them how to “Yes, and” their way through difficult client meetings and high-stakes presentations.

For C-Suite Executives: He helps leaders move from “command and control” to “listen and adapt,” teaching them that the best business strategy is often the one you co-create with your team in the moment.

A Full Karma Bank

Now 40, Mike’s “why” has shifted. He’s realized that being rich isn’t the goal — showing his four kids how to be good humans is. He lives by a conviction of radical kindness, even when it costs him.

His first nonprofit venture didn’t result in a financial windfall, but that didn’t stop him. He knows that the world can be dark, and if he can be a light — through a business strategy or a 30-minute improv set — he’s going to. His bank account doesn’t always have the most zeroes, but his “karma bank” stays full.

The Legacy of Showing Up

If the business and the workshops ended tomorrow, Mike’s mission wouldn’t change. He is still learning to show himself the same grace he shows others — a task he admits is his hardest work yet.

When people look back at Mike Hanselman, he doesn’t need a list of accolades. He just wants it known that in a world where it’s easy to hide or stay silent, he always showed up. He stayed in the scene, he listened to his partners, and he never stopped building.
