Interview with Rick, Owner of Cope Collision
In our latest installment of Idaho’s Local Leaders blog series, we sat down with Rick, second-generation owner of Cope Collision, a family-run business that’s been a cornerstone of the Idaho community since 1963. From humble beginnings to industry certification and state-wide recognition, Cope Collision has evolved into a trusted name in auto repair—while staying rooted in family values, high standards, and customer care.
A Legacy That Started in 1963
“My father started the business in 1963,” Rick shares. “It began as an automotive repair shop. After high school, I originally thought I wanted to be an accountant, but that didn’t stick. So I joined my dad in the business and went through the auto body program at Boise State’s vocational school.”
Over the years, Cope Collision transitioned from general mechanical work to focusing strictly on collision repair. Today, the shop is manufacturer-certified for numerous vehicle lines and adheres to strict industry standards.
From Family Values to Industry Standards
When asked what sets Cope Collision apart, Rick doesn’t hesitate: “We care more about doing the job right than cutting corners. We follow manufacturer repair procedures strictly and prioritize vehicle safety above all else.”
The team takes extensive measures, including safety inspections and calibrations for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), ensuring every repair returns the vehicle to pre-accident safety.
Facing Challenges with Commitment
Like many in the industry, one of the biggest hurdles Rick faces is dealing with insurance companies: “Getting paid for the full scope of proper repairs can be tough. We work hard to document everything thoroughly and explain why it needs to be done.”
Investing in Knowledge
Technology is always evolving in the auto industry, and Cope Collision keeps pace through rigorous ongoing training. “We’re an I-CAR Gold Class shop, and all of our technicians are Platinum level. We also maintain certifications with manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, which require regular recertification,” Rick explains.
Whether it’s welding, paint, or electronics, every technician continues their education to ensure customers receive the highest-quality repairs.
A Day at Cope Collision
Rick walks us through a typical day: “We start every morning with a release meeting to review each vehicle in the shop. Throughout the day, I review repair procedures, ensure parts are properly estimated, and check progress at every step—from body repair to refinishing and scanning.”
Customer Care That Sticks
While there’s no one “most memorable” customer story, Rick says the most rewarding part of the job is helping people navigate the repair process—especially when insurance companies push back.
“It feels good knowing we fought for them and ensured their vehicle was repaired safely,” he says. “That’s what matters most.”
Teamwork Makes the Difference
Rick attributes Cope Collision’s success to the strength of his team: “Everyone here takes great pride in what they do. We make sure to communicate, share knowledge, and stay aligned on doing the job the right way.”
Positive reviews and customer feedback are shared with the whole team. “It means a lot to them too—it confirms that their work matters.”
Advice for Aspiring Auto Repair Entrepreneurs
“Starting a shop today is tough—it’s expensive,” Rick advises. “Do your research, understand the equipment you’ll need, and talk to people in the industry. Like anything, there’s good and bad equipment. Invest wisely.”
Giving Back to Idaho
The local community has been a vital part of Cope Collision’s success. “We support groups like the Chamber of Commerce and Treasure Valley Givers. Our customers are incredibly loyal, and we’re grateful for that.”
This year, Cope Collision is also supporting Idaho2Fly, a nonprofit that provides fly-fishing retreats for men living with cancer. “It gives them a safe space to open up, share their journey, and find support. It’s a cause close to our hearts.”
Looking Ahead: Growth with Purpose
What’s next for Cope Collision?
“We’re pursuing more manufacturer certifications—Jaguar Land Rover, Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche,” Rick says. “We may expand to another nearby location to make more room, possibly move our paint department. But we’ll stay right here in Idaho. We want to keep our focus on quality and customer care.”
And it shows. Last year, Cope Collision was named Best Collision Repair Shop in the State of Idaho.
Rick humbly credits his team: “I can’t take the credit—my technicians and employees earned that.”
Final Thoughts
Rick’s story isn’t just about cars. It’s about family, integrity, and craftsmanship. From his father’s ambition in 1963 to today’s state-leading reputation, Cope Collision reflects what’s best about small business in Idaho: people who care deeply about their craft, their community, and doing things the right way.
