At Poor Man Window Cleaning, we love highlighting the unique stories of local businesses that contribute to the vibrant spirit of Treasure Valley. This week, we had the pleasure of speaking with John Challenger, the owner of OFR Office Furniture Resources, a business that has been serving the community for nearly two decades.
About OFR Office Furniture Resources
OFR specializes in delivering and installing office furniture, moving services for both residential and commercial clients, storage solutions, and final-mile delivery. Their commitment to excellence and customer care has set them apart in the industry.
“We provide excellent customer service,” John said. “Not just to our clients but to the end users we serve, ensuring every project is handled with care and professionalism.”
A 19-Year Journey of Growth
John acquired OFR 19 years ago when it was a small operation with just two pickup trucks and a storage unit. Recognizing its potential, he rebranded and expanded the business, which now boasts 50 employees, two locations, and 27,000 square feet of warehouse space.
“The company had so much potential,” John reflected. “It’s been rewarding to grow it to what it is today.”
Why Treasure Valley?
John chose to keep OFR in the Treasure Valley because of its growth and potential. Initially focused on office furniture repair, John saw an opportunity to rebrand and expand the services offered.
“Treasure Valley is growing, and we’ve expanded out to places like Idaho Falls while keeping our roots here in Boise,” he shared.
What Makes OFR Unique?
John attributes OFR’s success to its family atmosphere and exceptional benefits for employees.
“I started this business with a vision to treat my team like I’d want to be treated,” John said. “Providing good wages, outstanding benefits, and fostering a family-like environment has been key to our growth.”
Challenges and Triumphs
Like many small business owners, John faced challenges with finding skilled labor. By offering competitive pay and benefits, he’s been able to attract and retain talented employees.
Another highlight of John’s journey was being recognized by InstallNET as an industry leader. “To start with no experience and then be acknowledged as a leader in the industry—that was a proud moment,” John said.
Future Goals for OFR
John envisions further growth for OFR, including expanding to more states and acquiring or building a new warehouse in the next couple of years.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
John’s advice for anyone starting a business:
“Have a plan in place and a support team that includes an insurance broker, an accountant, and a banker. Build those relationships early—you’ll need them more than you think.”
Balancing Work and Life
When asked how he balances his business with personal life, John shared, “Sometimes, you just have to turn off the phone and be present with your family. I couldn’t have done this without the support of my wife and family.”
John’s Treasure Valley Favorites
John’s favorite local spot? Chandler’s, a steakhouse known for its phenomenal steaks, excellent service, and impressive wine list.
When he’s not working, John loves to travel, exploring new places and experiences outside the Treasure Valley.
Staying Connected with the Community
John stays active in the community through networking groups and local events, fostering personal connections that have been key to OFR’s success.
John Challenger’s journey with OFR Office Furniture Resources is a testament to hard work, vision, and a commitment to building meaningful relationships.
